Nam June Paik' Works

Nam June Paik was born South Korea. He worked with a variety of media and is considered to be the first video artist. he is considered by some to have been the author of the phrase "Information Superhighway", which according to his own account, he used in a Rockefeller Foundation paper in 1974.


He was born in Seoul in 1932 and Nam June Paik passed away at his Miami home at 7:00pm EST on Sunday, January 29th, 2006. . He had four older brothers and his father who worked as a textile manufacturer. When he was growing up, he was trained as a classical pianist. during the Korean War his family moved to Hong Kong and later moved to Japan. He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1956. Paik moved to Germany to study the history of music at Munich University. While studying in Germany, he met Karheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Joseph Beuys, and Wolf Vostell. Among them Wolf Vostell is inspired him to work to in the field of electronic art. Paik moved to New York in 1964, and began working with classical cellist Charlotte Moorman to combine his video, music, and performance.
